Family Reading Corner

The more you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go.  Dr. Seuss. “I can Read with My Eyes Shut”

The Family Reading Center provides parents and children  access to a “world of reading and literacy “ to help improve the language and literacy skills of both parents and children.

Family literacy is the concept of family members enhancing literacy skills with things they do together. Some of the components of a good family literacy program involve the entire family, irrespective of the literacy levels. It also incorporates various mediums (books with words, picture books, art, and dramatic play). Most importantly, family literacy should include story-telling and be inclusive of children of different ages (www.aplaceofourown.org)

This site will:

  1. Recommend books and blogs to read from best selling authors, parents and everyday people
  2. Offer online programs and activities to support and improve family and children school readiness and academic success

Fact: More than one-third of children from poor communities enter kindergarten classes already behind their peers in reading; a child who is not reading by the end of first grade has only a one-in-eight chance of ever becoming a proficient reader. America ranks in the bottom third among developed nations in terms of student performance, 25th in math and 21st in science. We fall behind in nearly every other subject as well.
